- Day One
- Day Two
- Day Three
Lock Haven to Renovo

Beautiful Lock Haven, a small river community on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, was once the last outpost of civilization. It marks the point where flat farmlands give way to the mountainous forests and river valleys of the Pennsylvania Wilds. While you're here, shop at the Woolrich Store and learn about the town's history at the Heisey Museum. Be sure to stroll around town and check out the large Victorian and Gothic houses, too---the early lumber barons built these, and they're spectacular! You'll pass the Sproul State Forest on your way to Renovo. At more than 307,000 acres, it's the largest forest in Pennsylvania. You'll also pass by Hyner Run State Park, which is popular with hang-gliders---so look up!
Renovo to Ridgway
Renovo got its start as a major railroad town---this was where the engines stopped for repairs. Today it's known for its scenic beauty. The intersection of the scenic byways, Renovo reminds some people of a small European village. Take a walk around and see if you agree. Stop by the post office while you're here and check out the mural. You can also relax and take in the views at Hyner View State Park. Keep your eyes open for all sorts of wildlife---deer, bears, turkeys, and even elk! Along the way to Ridgway, you'll pass the towns of Westport, Keating, Sinnemahoning, Driftwood, and Emporium. Each is worth visiting, so take your time, make some stops, and enjoy the leisurely drive.
Ridgway to the Allegheny National Forest

On the way to Ridgway, you'll pass by the village of St. Marys. It's worth visiting because it's the home of Straub Brewery! The St. Joseph Monastery is also quite impressive. Ridgway is known as the Lily of the Valley, and once you see it, you'll understand. This beautiful town on the edge of the forest has its roots in the lumber industry, of course. The sight of its grand Victorian homes will take you back to a more elegant time. The road to the Allegheny National Forest is spectacular along the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, which circles the Kinzua Creek Arm of the Allegheny Reservoir. Once you enter the forest, head for the Kinzua Dam and the Rim Rock Overlook. The view will take your breath away!
